The desperate efforts of neo-Darwinism

To counter the setback to Darwin's theory, neo-Darwinists propose fantastic new scenarios

The crisis surrounding Darwin’s theory deepened because of the laws of genetics discovered in the first quarter of the 20th century CE. An Austrian monk, Gregor Mendel, published his work in the proceedings of the local society of naturalists in Brünn, Austria (now Brno, Czech Republic), in 1866 CE, but none of his contemporaries appreciated its significance. It was not until 1900 CE, 16 years after Mendel's death, that his work was rediscovered independently by Hugo de Vries in Holland, Carl Erich Correns in Germany, and Erich Tschermak von Seysenegg in Austria.
Like several investigators before him, Mendel experimented on hybrids of different varieties of a plant. Mendel investigated the common pea plant (Pisum sativum). His methods differed in two essential respects from those of his predecessors. First, instead of trying to describe the appearance of whole plants with all their characteristics, Mendel followed the inheritance of single, easily visible and distinguishable traits, such as round versus wrinkled seed, yellow versus green seed, purple versus white flowers, etc. Second, he made exact counts of the numbers of plants bearing this or that trait; it was from such quantitative data that he deduced the rules governing inheritance.
Nevertheless, a group of scientists who were determined to remain loyal to Darwin endeavoured to come up with solutions. They came together at a meeting organized by the Geological Society of America in 1941 CE. Geneticists such as G. Ledyard Stebbins and Theodosius Dobzhansky, zoologists such as Ernst Mayr and Julian Huxley, paleontologists such as George Gaylord Simpson and Glenn L. Jepsen and mathematical geneticists such as Ronald Fisher and Sewall Right, after long discussions finally agreed on ways to “patch up” Darwinism.
This cadre focused on the question of the origin of the advantageous variations that supposedly caused living organisms to evolve – an issue that Darwin himself was unable to explain but simply tried to side-step -- by depending on Lamarck. The idea they now focused on, was “random mutations”. They named this new theory “The Modern Synthetic Evolution Theory”, which was formulated by adding the concept of mutation to Darwin’s natural selection thesis. In a short time, this theory came to be known as “neo-Darwinism” and those who put forward the theory were called “neo-Darwinists”.
The following decades were to become an era of desperate attempts to prove neo-Darwinism. It was already known that mutations – or “accidents” – that took place in the genes of living organisms were always harmful. Neo-Darwinists tried to establish a case for “advantageous mutation” by carrying out thousands of mutation experiments. All their attempts ended in complete failure.
They also tried to prove that the first living organisms could have originated by chance under primitive terrestrial conditions that the theory posited but the same failure attended these experiments too. Every experiment that sought to prove that life could be generated by chance failed. Probability calculations prove that not even a single protein, the building-blocks of life, could have originated by chance. And the cell -- which supposedly emerged by chance under primitive and uncontrolled terrestrial conditions according to evolutionists – could not be synthesized by even the most sophisticated laboratories of the 20th century CE.
Neo-Darwinist theory is also defeated by fossil records. No “transitional forms”, which were supposed to show the gradual evolution of living organisms from primitive to advanced species as the neo-Darwinist theory claimed, have ever been found anywhere in the world. At the same time, comparative anatomy revealed that species that were supposed to have evolved from one another had in fact very different anatomical features and that they could never have been ancestors or descendants of each other.
Neo-Darwinism was never a scientific theory anyway, but was an ideological dogma that was elevated to the status of a pseudo “religion” by evolution scientists. This is why the champions of the theory of evolution still go on defending it in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. However,  they cannot agree on one point to prove the "truth" behind Darwinism and have proposed many different models to facilitate the realization of evolution as the “right” one. One of the most important of these models is the fantastic scenario known as “punctuated equilibrium”.
Even a layman taking an objective look at the neo-Darwinist theories that are being propagated with such fierce fanaticism, realizes how implausible they appear. When so-called 'rational' scientists adhere to them ignoring common-sense and scientific proof alike, one is forced to wonder whether there is something other than Science at stake.

Prophethood: the perception of realities

Everyone who desires the dominance of Islam and who strives for that cause, should realize the importance of the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and the decisive role it has to play in today’s  conflict of civilizations. They should address the issue by re-determining priorities and strategies. The following factors should be kept in mind while evaluating the situation:

1- The perception of eternal finality

We must understand the present social milieu in which we are striving for the practice and dominance of Islam. It is definitely different and 1400 years away from the time of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) despite the fact that the efforts being made are a continuation of the same prophetic mission.

Muslims must understand that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was not appointed a prophet for any particular nation or era. Rather, he was sent to humanity as a whole, irrespective of time and place. From the 6th  century to the 21st century CE and even beyond, until the Day of Judgment, Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) will remain the only prophet. This statement, although simple, has far-reaching connotations. It is obligatory that the message of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) be continuously delivered in the manner done in his time.

2- The perception of an immortal message

We should concede that the example of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is still present amongst us. This is because the Divine Book that he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) brought is still intact, and the minutest details of his life are preserved in the Sunnah (Prophetic traditions), and his Deen (Divine way of life) has spread all over the world through his followers.

Consequently, it is incumbent on Muslims to continue with the mission launched by him, considering it a responsibility bestowed by Allaah.

3- The true perception of prophethood

Muslims must recognize that to combat the Jaahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period of ignorance) during the era of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) it was important to demand commitment towards his prophethood. Although faith in Allaah comes first and is the essence of the Islamic way of life, yet faith in the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )  is equally important and decisive. Belief in God is the basic premise of all Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, and cradles the purpose of prophethood; yet, it is only by believing in a prophet that one can yield to the concept of Allaah. Thus, only that belief and concept of Allaah is acceptable which is based on the declaration and description provided by the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

Just as the Quran is believed to be the revealed Word of Allaah without any reservations, similarly, the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is also beyond any doubt. These two facts have to be taken as granted, otherwise, there cannot be a rational and sound interpretation of the concepts of Halaal and Haraam (lawful and unlawful), Waajibaat and Manhiyyaat (obligations and prohibitions), Athaab and Thawaab (penalty and reward). Practically then, faith and obedience to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )  is equivalent to the obedience of Allaah and is the only way to seek the pleasure and proximity of  Allaah.

4- Importance of the belief in prophethood

Belief in the prophethood should be given due importance and priority in all our efforts of Da’wah and Jihaad (striving for the supremacy of Allaah’s injunctions). Otherwise, mere belief in Allaah would become meaningless, because the Jews and Christians too claimed to be believers of one God, and the Quran itself has praised the excellence of Ibaadah (worship) and Akhlaaq (moral dignity) of some of them, yet they incurred Allaah’s wrath simply because they denied belief in the prophethood.

5- Belief in prophethood is a source of Allaah’s help

Belief in prophethood is decisive because the promise of Allaah’s help, salvation and victory is with the Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, and with those who truly believe in the prophethood, sincerely follow prophetic teachings, become helpers in their mission and struggle to establish Allaah’s Deen (code of life). The Quran says (what means): “And verily, Our Word has gone forth of old for our slaves, -- the Messengers, that they verily would be made triumphant. And that Our hosts would be victors.” [Quran 35: 171-173]

6- The message of love and peace

The eternal struggle of the prophetic mission against the mischief of unbelievers, which has now taken the shape of a conflict between Islam and the West, is, in fact, a struggle for winning over the hearts and minds of people. Winning over the hearts of people would result in the supremacy and dominance of Islam -- the true religion of Allaah. Force can conquer land, acquire money and goods, seize political power but it cannot win people’s minds and hearts. Similarly, argument can earn support but it can never secure commitment, devotion and readiness to face sacrifices in life. There is only one way to win over hearts: a firm belief in the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) full devotion to his mission, love and reverence for him and complete obedience and commitment to follow him in all aspects of life. This is how people’s hearts have been won in the past and will be won in the future.

We should strive to prove that Islam is the true religion which presents a complete code of life; warn people about the curse of interest or usury and the dangers of un-Islamic economic systems, and highlight the beauty of the Islamic social, political, economic and family system. However, we should never forget that the purpose of all these pursuits is to create favorable conditions and a conducive environment for upholding the cause of Truth.

If people admit all Islamic values but refuse to believe in the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) the way to achieve success in the war of civilizations will remain obstructed. There are many people who praise Islam, eulogize Islamic arts and architecture, applaud Islamic spiritualism and mysticism but, still, are not ready to follow the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) as they do not believe in his prophethood! Such people, therefore, can never be regarded as aides and supporters of the prophetic mission.

Similarly, even if we supply ample proof that Islam ensures human rights more than any other ideology; that it not only upholds women’s rights but has given them a status which was inconceivable earlier, even in the West; and that the penal code of Islam is not cruel, but sympathetic and compassionate to the people and society, it would still not enhance the prospects of winning over people’s hearts. Arguments of logic and intellect cannot serve the purpose either. What is needed is a firm and unshakable belief in the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and a pure flow of love for him more than anything else.

Thus, the biggest objective before us should be to give top priority to the Da’wah towards the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). It does not mean that we start telling people that they are infidels or transgressors if they do not believe that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is the true prophet of Allaah.

By this we mean:

  • Employing all the possible means -- especially modern means of communication -- to tell the world about the unparalleled beauty of the Prophet’s character, pleasing features of his personality, his mercy, compassion, love and deep affection towards Allaah’s creation, which make him the best example for humankind. We should do this repeatedly, especially before those who are his staunch enemies and in their own language. It is an undeniable fact that the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) loved him because of his tender and loving heart and his former enemies became loyal and humble followers due to his excellent morals and behavior.
  • All Muslims -- especially those who are striving for the supremacy of the Prophetic mission all over the world -- should adopt and follow his model of character. Books, speeches and videos are not enough to present the Prophet’s life, our very lives should reflect his exemplary values. Our homes, public places and mosques must become the sources of disseminating the luminous life and message of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). Our mosques should welcome opponents in the manner that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) welcomed the delegations of Najraan and Thaqeef. This is possible only when our lives begin to resonate with the life of the Prophet, as the poet Iqbaal has said: “Every heart is in harmony with his call and in every chest there is a piece of his heart.”
  • We should adopt such a manner of presenting the life and message of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) that without getting involved in lengthy debates we should be able to successfully rebut and diffuse the allegations raised against him.
  • The real task before us is to struggle for the supremacy of Islam and translate into action the teachings and the message brought by the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). Imaam Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon him has recorded a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “I swear by Allaah in whose hands lies the life of Muhammad, whoever from amongst this Ummah, be he a Jew or a Christian, hears about me but dies without having belief in what I have brought, will go to hellfire.”
According to Imaam Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him Ummah here means the "Ummah of Da’wah" (the people who are addressed by the Da’wah) i.e. all the people on this earth from the onset of the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) until the Day of Resurrection. Imaam Ghazaali may Allaah have mercy upon him has made a significant point: What does ‘hearing’ mean? Does it mean merely to hear about the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) through one’s ears? According to Imaam Ghazaali may Allaah have mercy upon him: “Hearing means, to hear about the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) his life and mission in such a way that is essential to convince one’s heart and mind.
  • Today a vast majority of infidels have not even heard the name of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and those who have, have heard it only cursorily. In fact, the people who have been properly conveyed the message of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) are very few. Are not we responsible for the billions of people who have no knowledge and, consequently, no belief in the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his being the seal of all Prophets?

The Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) had sent emissaries to different countries during his lifetime to proclaim the message of Islam. Today, there are emissaries in every nook and corner of the globe -- over one billion Muslims -- who have his message with them. Muslims who realize their responsibility should stand up with sincerity and devotion, to work towards bringing people close to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and his mission. An equal amount of time and resources must be spent in disseminating the teachings of Islam, and highlighting the personality, life, character and moral excellence of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

Those who get closer to the source of illumination will automatically find their minds and hearts opening in the warmth and light. The more the people believe in the prophethood of Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) the stronger will be their devotion to his life and mission, and the greater will be the chances of the Prophetic message emerging victorious in the conflict of civilizations.
As Muslims, this is a debt that we owe to the world, and each one of us should come forward to repay his share of the debt.

What is the purpose of life

By Khaalid Yaseen

Khalid Yaseen delivered this lecture in Saudi Arabia, and later that night, 43 people accepted Islam. That should tell you how powerful the message in the lecture was.

All praise be to Allaah and may Allaah exalt the mention of His messenger, Muhammad.

The information which I wish to share with you may seem a bit extensive, but when you consider the capacity of the human brain and the capacity that it can store, I am sure that a few pages in tonight's talk will not overburden you.

I am honored to have this opportunity and I would like to begin by saying that all of you have an equal responsibility. That responsibility is to listen with an open heart and an open mind. In a world filled with prejudice and cultural conditioning, it is very hard to be able to find people to take a moment to think about life objectively and try to arrive at the truth about this world and the real purpose of our lives.

Unfortunately, when you ask most people the question: "What is the purpose of life?" (such a fundamental and important question), they will not tell you what they have concluded through observation or analytical reasoning. Rather, in most cases, they will simply tell you what someone else said, or they will tell you what is "commonly presumed" by others, i.e., What my father said purpose of life is, what the minister of my church said the purpose of life is, what my teacher in school said, what my friend said, etc. If I ask anyone about the purpose of eating or why do we eat, everyone will say [in one word or another] that it is for nutritional purposes, because nutrition sustains life. If I ask anyone why they work, they will say because it's a necessity in order to support themselves and to provide for the needs of their families. If I ask anyone why they sleep, why they wash, why they dress, etc., they will answer with appropriate answers, for these are common necessities for all human beings. We can follow this line of questioning with a hundred questions and receive the same or similar answers from anyone in any language from any place in the world. Then I ask you the question: Why, when we ask the question, "What is the goal and purpose of life?" that we get many different answers? It is because people are confused; they don't really know. They are stumbling in the dark, and rather than say, "I don't know"; they just offer any answer they have been programmed to give. Think about it. Is our purpose in this world simply to eat, sleep, dress, work, acquire some material things and enjoy ourselves? Is this our purpose? Why are we born? What is the object of our existence? What is the wisdom behind the creation of man and this tremendous universe?

Think about those questions. Some people argue that there is no proof of any diving origin; no proof that there is a god and there is no proof that this universe has come about through any divine purpose. There are people who argue this way, and they say that perhaps this world came about by chance. A big bang, and this great world [with all its orchestration] just came together. They argue that life doesn't have any definite purpose, and that there is nothing that can prove [either through logic or science] that there is a god, or a purpose or any divine reason behind this world.

Here I would like to mention a few verses from the Noble Quran that address this subject. We seek the protection of Allaah from every evil thing. Allaah mentions to us in the Noble Quran (what means): "And to Allaah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allaah is over all things competent. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allaah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.." [Quran 3: 189-191]

Now here in these verses, Allaah draws our attention to the creation of the heavens and earth, the alternation of the night and the day, the creation of the universe. He calls our attention to their creation and their precision, and mentions those who contemplate the wonders of creation and realize that this was not created for any foolish purpose, [that Allaah is exalted above doing such a thing] and they seek refuge with Allaah from the punishment of Hell. Truly, when you see the design of all that Allaah created, you realize it is very powerful and very precise. Something very powerful and very precise; something beyond your own calculation and imagination, cannot be foolish. It cannot be just "thrown together".

There are many examples of things that happen by chance. Let me offer one situation. If you took ten colored marbles, then numbered them one to ten and you put them inside a bag. Next, you shook that bag to mix them up. Then, closing your eyes and reaching into the bag, you tried to pull out the marbles in order-1 to 10. What is the chance of pulling out the marbles in order? Do you know what the chances are? It is twenty six million to one (26,000,000 to 1). And this is something within our ability to do. So now I ask you, what is the chance that the heavens and the earth just came together as they are [with the exact precision and orchestration in their existence]?

My dear respected brothers and sisters, we have to ask ourselves a further question. When you see a bridge, a building or an automobile, you automatically consider the person or company that constructed it. When you see a large ship, an airplane, a rocket, a satellite; you also think about how incredible it is. [You know by its design who the maker is.] When you see a super international airport, nuclear plant or an orbiting space station you have to be thoroughly impressed with the engineering dynamics that are involved. Yet, these are just things that are manufactured by human beings. So what about the human body with its massive and intricate control systems? Think about it. Think about the brain: how it thinks, functions, analyzes, retrieves and stores information, as well as distinguishes and categorizes information in a millionth of a second, all of this constantly. Think about the brain for a moment. (And don't forget the fact that you are using your brain to consider itself!) This is the brain that made the automobile, the rocket ships, the boats, and so on. Think about the brain and who made that! Think about the heart. Think about how it pumps continuously for sixty or seventy years [taking in and discharging blood throughout the body] maintaining steady precision throughout the life of the person. Think about the kidneys and the liver and the various functions they perform. The purifying instruments of the body that perform hundreds of chemical analyses simultaneously and also control the level of toxicity in the content of the body. All of these are done automatically. Think about your eyes, the human cameras, that adjust, focus, interpret, evaluate, and discern color automatically, naturally receiving and adjusting to light and distance. Think about it-Who created them? Who has mastered their design and function? Who plans and regulates their function? Human beings do this? No, of course not. What about this universe? Think about this. This earth is one planet in our solar system, and our solar system is one [of possible many] solar systems. Our galaxy, The Milky Way, is one of the galaxies. There are one hundred million galaxies in the universe. They are all in order and they are all precise. They are not colliding with each other. They are not conflicting with on another. They are swimming along in an orbit that has been set for them. Did human beings set that into motion and are human beings maintaining that precision? No, of course not. Think about the oceans, the fish, the insects, the birds, the plants, bacteria, and chemical elements that have not yet been discovered and cannot be detected even with the most sophisticated instruments. Yet each of them has a law that they follow. Did all of this synchronization, balance, harmony, variation, design, maintenance, operation and infinite numeration happen all by chance? Do these things function perfectly and perpetually also by chance? No, of course not. That would be totally illogical and foolish. In the least, it indicates that however it came to exist-it exists beyond the realm of human capability. We will all agree to that. The Being, The Almighty Power, God, The Creator who has the knowledge to design and proportion crated all of this and is responsible for maintaining it. HE is the only one that deserves praise and gratitude.

If I were to give each one of you one hundred dollars for no reason, you would at least say thank you. What about your eyes, your kidneys, your brain, your children, and your life: Who gave you all of that? Is He not worthy of praise and thanks? Is He not worthy of your worship and recognition?

My brothers and sisters, in a nutshell, this is the goal and purpose of this life. Allaah Says to us in the Noble Quran (what means): "And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." [Quran 51: 56] This is what he Almighty said. Our purpose in this life is to recognize The Creator, to be grateful to Him, to worship Him, to surrender ourselves to Him and to obey the laws that He has determined for us. It means worship is our purpose in life. Whatever we do in the course of that worship, [i.e., the eating, the sleeping, the dressing, the working, the enjoying,] between birth and death is consequential and subject to His orders. But the main reason for our creation is worship. I don't think anyone who is analytical or scientific will have much of an argument with that purpose. They may have some other reason with themselves-but that is something they have to deal with between themselves and Almighty God.

Following note from Learning Quran online Blog

Learn holy Quran online which it self states in it that only those who are learn quran and pure should touch the holy text: This is indeed a Quran in Arabic in a book well-guarded, which none shall touch but those who are clean (56:77-79).  One should make formal ablutions before handling or Quran reading and this the quran tutor should tell in his quran teaching when quran for kids lessons are going on. After intercourse or menstrual bleeding one should not touch the holy Quran or do quran recitation and also not do quran memorization until after bathing non-Muslim should not handle the sacred text, but may listen to Quran online or read quran translation or exegesis. With all these things in mind when one is not reading or reciting holy Quran it should be closed and stored in nice and clean place, it should never be placed on floor or in a bathroom and Muslim should focus on reading quran the tajweed quran and its rules with a proper institute.

The Islamic concept of faith

The basis of any religion is faith. Faith is not merely conviction of the truth of a given principle, but it is essentially the acceptance of a principle as a basis for action. Without faith, a man is like a car without a steering wheel, drifting aimlessly upon a sea of doubt and confusion.

What is faith in Islam? It is belief in the Unity of God or Tawheed. This is expressed in the primary Kalimah (Word) of Islam as: “Laa ilaaha illallaah", meaning: “There is no one worthy of worship but Allaah.”

This beautiful phrase is the bedrock of Islam, its foundation and its essence. It is the expression of this belief, which differentiates a true Muslim from an unbeliever, or one who associates others with God in His Divinity.

The acceptance or denial of this phrase produces a world of difference among human beings. The believer finds out the right path, knows the truth and chalks out the course of life in the light of reality; the unbeliever chases one illusion after the other and gropes into the dark. For the believers, there is the promise of unhampered progress and resounding success in this world and in the Hereafter; whereas failure and ignominy are ultimately the lot of those who refuse to believe in it.

In fact, Tawheed is a revolutionary concept, a tremendously forceful doctrine and is the very starting-point of Islam.
However, the difference between believers and unbelievers is not the result of merely uttering a few words. The real force lies in the conscious acceptance of this doctrine and its stipulations and complete adherence to it in practical life.

The meaning of: “There is no one worthy of worship but Allaah”:

In Arabic, the word ‘Ilaah’ means 'one who is worshipped', i.e., a Being which on account of its Greatness and Power is considered worthy to be worshipped, to be bowed to in love, humility and submission. Anything or any being possessing powers too great to be comprehended by man is also called Ilaah. The concept of Ilaah also includes the possession of infinite powers that may astonish others. It also conveys the sense that others are dependent upon Ilaah and He is not dependent upon any one else.

It appears from humankind’s ancient history and the oldest relics of antiquity that we have been able to obtain, that in every age, man had recognized some deity or deities and worshipped them. Even in the present age, every nation on the face of the earth -- from the most primitive to the most civilized -- believes in and worships some deity. It shows that the idea of having a deity and of worshipping is ingrained in human nature. There is something within man's soul, which forces him to do so.

Acceptance of the doctrine of Unity of God is what is termed faith in Islam. However, faith in the Islamic sense is not merely intellectual assent to a certain dogma or a subjective emotional response to a great personality, but a volitional and dynamic reaction to belief in one God, Who stands for the highest perfection and belief in the Hereafter -- a belief that fully assimilates both intellectual and emotional responses. It is at once an affirmation of a truth and a surrender to the truth affirmed.

Intellectual apprehension plays an important part in Islamic faith. The Quran, in several places, appeals to human reason in arriving at true belief. It says (what means):
"And thus do We explain the Signs in various ways that the truth may become established and that they may say: "Thou hast read out what thou hast learnt' and that We may explain it to a people who have knowledge." [Quran 6: 106]

Addressing the unbelievers, the Quran asks (what means): "Those who associate gods with Allaah say: 'If Allaah had pleased, we would not have associated gods with Him, nor would our fathers, nor would we have made anything unlawful.' In like manner did those who were before them accuse God's Messenger of falsehood, until they tasted of Our wrath. Say: "Have you any knowledge? Then produce it for us. You only follow mere conjecture. And you only tell lies." [Quran 6: 149]

"Surely, the worst of beasts in the sight of Allaah are the deaf and the dumb, who have no sense." [Quran 8: 32]

The faith in which knowledge, emotion and will are all involved, is manifested not in the form of a doctrine or dogma, but in the form of an ideal value.

Faith in Islam is the moral ground and basis for action and not a dogmatic assertion of salvation-justification like Christianity. The well-being of man, therefore, depends upon faith that is accompanied by good actions.

Thus, faith is firm belief arising out of knowledge and unshakable conviction in the Unity of Allaah, in His Attributes and revealed guidance. One who believes as such is called Mu'min (faithful).

This faith invariably leads man to a life of obedience and submission to the Will of Allaah, and a person who lives this life of submission is known as a Muslim. Thus, we find that faith is the starting point that leads man to a life of submission to Allaah, and that a man cannot become a Muslim without faith.

The Unity of God is the most fundamental concept in Islam.

The first step in discussing the concept of faith in Islam is to establish the existence of God, because if He does not exist there is no question of believing in Him. Therefore, the proof of existence of Allaah is the basis of the whole concept of Islamic faith.

The chosen religion

Allaah the All-Mighty Says (what means): "This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [Quran 5:3]

This was one of the last verses revealed chronologically to Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) , marking the completion of the Quran and the perfection of Islam. Islam is complete and perfect and is not thereafter susceptible to addition or abrogation. Being eternal and universal, the Islamic Law, which was made by God (Allaah) Himself, Who knows what is best for us under all circumstances, is resilient and adjustable to the changing conditions of time and place.

The perfection of Islam is manifest in the fact that God (Allaah) has made it reign supreme and prevail over other religions. Allaah’s favor upon the Muslims is manifest in the fact that He granted them true guidance, support and honor in this world and in the Hereafter. He has also chosen for them Islam as their religion because it is the Truth, and it is for this reason that He will not accept any other religion but Islam.

The Quran says (what means): "And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the life to come he shall be among the losers.” [Quran 3:85].

Islam gives its followers happiness in this world and eternal bliss in the life to come. Islam simply means total submission to the Will of Allaah. Therefore, it is the same in essence, whether given to Nooh (Noah), Ibraaheem (Abraham), Moosaa (Moses), 'Eesaa (Jesus), may Allaah exalt their mention, or to Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). For the message it calls to is the same, and the source of unity is the revelation from Allaah (which means): "He has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He enjoined on Noah, and that which We have revealed to you, and which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses and Jesus: namely that you should remain steadfast in religion and be not divided therein.” [Quran 42:13]

After the corruption of the older Scriptures, the Quran came with a twofold purpose -- to confirm the true and original message of Islam, and to stand as a witness to it, by confirming the truth and rejecting the falsehood, which over time came into the older Scriptures. Muslims are required to believe in the revealed Scriptures and to make no distinction between any of them, or the Messengers who brought them, may Allaah exalt their mention, because they all come from the One True God.

The Quran says (what means): "Say (O Muhammad to the Jews and Christians): 'We believe in Allaah and that which has been sent to us and that which has been sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and to Al-Asbat, (the offspring of the twelve sons of Jacob) and that which has been given to Moses and Jesus, and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted (in Islam).” [Quran 2:136]

These Scriptures have not been retained in their original form, due to the human omissions and additions that have crept into them. The Quran is the only Divine Scripture, which has stood the test of time without any change, because it is the Truth from God (Allaah), and the Truth never fades or diminishes. The Quran says (what means): "That which We have revealed to you (O Muhammad) of the Book (i.e., the Quran) is the Truth, confirming that which was (revealed) before it.” [Quran 35:31]

The Truth contained in the Quran will never be compromised because Allaah has taken upon Himself the responsibility of preserving it, as stated in the Quran (which means): "Verily We have sent the Reminder (i.e., the Quran), and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).” [Quran 15:9]

And also (what means): "Verily, it is an honorable well-fortified book of exalted power (because it is Allaah's Speech, and He has protected it from corruption). No falsehood can approach it from before or after it: it is sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise.” [Quran 41:41-42]

The revealed Scriptures before the advent of Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) such as the Torah and the Injeel, were written long after the demise of the Prophets to whom they were revealed. The entire Quran, on the contrary, was completely written in the lifetime of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) on pieces of palm trees, parchments and bones. Besides, tens of thousands of the Prophet's Companions committed it to memory while it was being revealed.

The Quran is still memorized and read in its original language

(Arabic) and taught to millions of people around the world. In fact, with every succeeding generation of Muslims, the number of those who have committed the entire Quran to memory has increased. There is no other book, religious or otherwise, which has been given this unparalleled care in recorded history.

The care with which the unadulterated teachings of Islam have been authentically recorded and preserved throughout the ages, is a clear evidence of the universality of the message of Islam and the finality of the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). The Quran is now available in its original form without change of any kind. The perfect preservation of the Quran signifies the preservation of Islam.

That is why Allaah Says in the Quran (what means):  "Verily the only acceptable religion to Allaah is Islam." [Quran 3:19]

Oneness of the Lord

Islam calls to the belief that the Creator of the universe is One and Unique without any partners. His nature is so sublime that it is far beyond our limited conceptions. He is not a mere abstract of philosophy. All the creatures testify to His Existence, and none is comparable to Him. The unity of design and the fundamental facts of creation and existence of the universe proclaim His Oneness.

He is Eternal, without beginning or end, the Absolute, Who is not limited by time or place or circumstance. He is the Creator, the Sustainer and the Planner of the whole universe. None has the right to be worshipped except Him. He has the most Beautiful Names and the Loftiest Attributes. His Knowledge extends to everything seen and unseen, present and future, near and far. His Grace and Mercy are unbounded. He is the All Mighty, the All Wise.

The Quran says (what means): "Say: 'He is Allaah, the One; Allaah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begets not, nor is He begotten; and there is none equal or comparable to Him.” [Quran 112:1-4]

And also (what means): "There is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” [Quran 42:11]

And also (what means): "He is the First (nothing is before Him), the Last (nothing is after Him), the Most High (nothing is above Him) and Most Near (nothing is nearer than Him). And He has full knowledge of all things.”  [Quran 57:3]

And also (what means): "He is Allaah, besides Whom none has the right to be worshipped, the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. He is Allaah besides Whom none has the right to be worshipped, the King, the Holy, the One Free from all defects, the Giver of security, the Watcher over His creatures, the All-Mighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to Allaah! (High is He) above what they associate as partners with Him. He is Allaah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, the Bestower of forms. To Him belong the Best Names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” [Quran 59:23-24]

And also (what means): "And they attribute falsely without knowledge sons and daughters to Him. Be He Glorified! (For He is) above what they attribute to Him! He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How can He have a son when He has no wife? He created all things, and He has full knowledge of everything. Such is Allaah, your Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Creator of all things. So worship Him (Alone). And He has the power to dispose of all affairs. No vision can grasp Him, but His Grasp is over all vision. He is the Most Subtle, Well-Aware.”  [Quran 6:100-103]

Tawheed, or monotheism, constitutes the essence of the teachings of Islam. It signifies that there is One Supreme Lord of the universe. He is Omnipotent and the Sustainer of the world and humankind. Unity pervades the whole universe. All of Allaah's creatures testify to His Oneness. This can be seen in their complete submission to His Will.

The perpetual succession of day and night in the most orderly manner; the fixed course of the sun and the moon; the mighty stars; the ceaseless alternation of the seasons -- the functioning of the whole universe including its most subtle elements in a most precise and systematic manner tell us about the Wisdom, Power, Greatness and Divine skill of this Great Creator, Who is Allaah.

Suicide - It's Not An Escape!

In a society like the West - that prides itself for freedom and liberty to attain maximum happiness, suicide ought to be the furthest from the mind?  Yet it is not an uncommon practice and may be someone who is close to you and opens up to you and you may be the only person who can help.  Suicide, resorted to in times of crisis as an end to those worries, is not only prohibited in Islam but it is also not an escape.  This article illustrates how Islam provides an alternative that is worth living for!

All praise and gratitude is to Allah – our Creator, Provider and the Maintainer of all the worlds.

In Allah’s care…
He brought together the sperm and the ovum from deep within two separate individuals, lodged the fertilized egg safely and prepared the uterus for the creation of a life – helpless and dependent on its Creator from the day of conception and beyond its birth, the vibrant youth, prudent adulthood up to its death at a senile old age and beyond to another life – its real home.  Not a day passes except that the same Creator sustains this life – and the six billion others like it on the planet – with attention to the most minute of its needs.  It breathes effortlessly without even noticing the complex art and perfection in the organs that enable it.

Why despair then…
With such care and attention for detail in each individual, is it then warranted to despair of the help of the most Merciful?

Along the same lines we find these verses in the Quran, (their translation) “Has there not been over man a period of time, when he was not a thing worth mentioning?  Verily, We have created man from a drop of mixed fluid (of man and woman) in order to try him so We made him a hearer and seer.  Verily, We showed him the way (gave him guidance in all matters), whether he be grateful or ungrateful (lit. kafoor i.e. who conceals and denies the favours or signs of Allah).  [Surah Insan 76:1-3]

For us is to worship and the provision is from Him…
He created us with such care and attention for a noble purpose and assured us that He will sustain and look after each and every need.  He informs in the Quran, (its translation) “I did not create the Jinn or the human except that they worship me; I do not want any provision from them (neither for themselves nor for any creatures) nor do I seek that they should feed Me (i.e. provide for whom I provide). Verily, Allah He is the Provider (of all), possessor of Power, the Most Strong.”  [Surah Dhariyat 51:56-58]

Why the trials and hardship…
Thus Allah took the responsibility of providing for and looking after all affairs of each and every individual and reassured He is the One fully capable of that.  Our concern is not to be anxious even in the most trying circumstance for Allah promised to provide a way out; rather our concern is to worship Him by living a life of obedience to Him and excellence in every walk of life.  Any hardship faced is no more than a trial to prove that our only concern is the approval of our actions by Allah before anyone else in the community and even before our own pleasure.  Allah promised in the Quran, “Alif, Lam, Mim, do people think that they will be left alone on (merely) saying: ‘We believe,’ and not be tested (in their claims)?  We have indeed tested those who were before them; and Allah will certainly make it known those who were truthful and He will certainly make known the liars.”  [Surah Ankabut 29:1-2]

Thus suicide forbidden in Quran and hadith…
Given that Allah promised to undertake the sustenance and any delay thereafter or withholding of any of its needs being merely for a trial, then there is no room for a person to take away the life that Allah has created for an important purpose and meticulously sustaining it each second for that purpose.  He prohibited the destroying of ones life in any manner as understood by the general meaning of the wording of this verse, “And do not throw (yourselves) with your own hands to destruction; but work (deeds of) excellence for verily Allah loves the people of excellence.”  [Surah Baqarah 2:195]   Thus we are ordered to not destroy ourselves rather to direct the mind and energies to doing good deeds that please Allah.  In another verse, “And do not kill yourselves. Surely, Allaah is Most merciful to you.”  [Surah Nisaa 4:29]

In fact the taking of even one life is regarded as the taking of the life of the whole of mankind, “Whoever kills a soul – unless for another soul or for corruption (vice and mischief spread) in the land – it is as if he had slain the whole of mankind.  And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved the whole of mankind.” [Surah Ma’idah 5:32]  The noun, soul (nafs) in the verse is without the definite particle. In Arabic, an indefinite noun in a conditional clause gives the meaning of generality and comprehensiveness.  Thus, the verse is not only concerning the taking of a soul of another person but even ones own life for both are souls created and entrusted to us by Allah.  This is not only prohibited but strongly condemned as though he killed the whole of mankind.

The Messenger of Allah (May the peace and blessings be on him) also prohibited it as learnt from the following hadith.  "Whoever throws himself down from a mountain and kills himself, he will be in the Fire of Hell throwing himself down for ever and ever. Whoever drinks poison and kills himself will have the poison in his hand, drinking it in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever. Whoever kills himself with a piece of iron (i.e. a weapon) will have that piece of iron in his hand, stabbing himself in the stomach with it in the Fire of Hell forever and ever." (Compiled in Sahih Bukhari).

The pain of suicide is for ever…
A person, who commits suicide, does so believing it an escape from his crisis so he ends his life willing to bear a moment of pain and may throw himself of a cliff.  Yet this hadith shows that he actually brings upon himself that pain not just momentarily but again and again in Hell-fire.

But from His mercy He may forgive suicide – so why not stay alive in His mercy…
However, from the mercy of Allah, the Exalted, He may forgive any sin committed by a person no matter how grave or He may punish in this life or in Hell-fire, except for Shirk.  Associating partners to Allah (Shirk) in divinity and Lordship is the only sin that Allah does not forgive.  The one doing shirk may seek forgiveness from the partner he claims to Allah in divinity but he is seeking forgiveness from someone who doesn’t have the authority to forgive!  This principle of forgiveness is established clearly in the Quran, “Verily Allah does not forgive that you set up partners with Him but He forgives anything else for whoever He wishes.”  [Surah Nisaa 4:48]

A person who is confident of the mercy of Allah in forgiving him for committing suicide, shouldn’t he have the same confidence that if he doesn’t commit suicide, Allah from His mercy and care will alleviate his hardship and distress?  If it takes time, it is no more than a temporary trial.

A day’s worth for a Muslim…
An extra day alive is that much longer to work good deeds to distance oneself from the eternal torment of Hell-fire and a golden opportunity to win a better place in Paradise.  It is for deserving of this mercy of Allah and a Paradise which no eye has ever seen, nor any ear has ever heard nor conceived by any mind, it is for this a Muslim is directed to strive every moment he is alive by the favour of Allah.  A Believer capitalizes on each breath Allah allows him – only the ignorant would throw away such a bargain!  Allah says (translated it means), “And whoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant) will see it (on the Day of Resurrection to be rewarded) and whoever does mischief equal to the weight of an atom shall see it.”  [Surah Zalzalah 99:7-8]00

Reassurances in Quran  and a purpose to live…
Thus a person contemplating suicide finds reassurance in the Quran and purpose for life.  He finds an explanation for ease or hardship.  He realizes that every hardship expiates for his sins and elevates his rank in Paradise.  He thus finds internal peace and pleasure even in external hardship and suffering and strives to acquire or lose the eternal comfort in the Hereafter.  The feelings of depression, anxiety, hopelessness and self-loathing diminish as a Believer contemplates on the message of the Quran, reflects on life and patterns the life according to its wise injunctions.  Initially, this achievement may be for moments only but with time and following the guidance of the Quran it may become a constant state.

Mixing with people…
The effectiveness of this process can be enhanced tremendously by interaction with other people, righteous Muslims and especially the people with Islamic knowledge and counselors.  As negative feelings develop and pessimism sets in, they can draw attention to vital realities of life and the Hereafter as well as be the encouraging spirit.  Not everyone will be sensitive nor can the person open up to just anyone, however it is good to at least with some who is understanding and able to help.  As for those who make the person feel worthless for reasons that are insignificant in Allah’s sight, not interacting with them is understandable.

Self-worth… with people…and with Allah…
No matter how insignificant a person is in the eyes of his peers, he is important enough in the sight of Allah that He created him with such care from even before birth.  The society judges a person for wealth, power, success in career, physical attraction and other worldly traits.  But a person who has none of this or has lost everything may still be the dearest to Allah, the angels and the believers who are rightly guided!  In Islam, the worth of an individual is solely based on taqwa – God consciousness that produces righteousness and piety.  A peasant or a bankrupt businessman may be superior to a CEO of the most successful organization on earth – if he excels in taqwa!  Allah makes this point clear in the Quran, (its translation reads) “O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has the most taqwa (piety).  Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-aware.”  [Surah Hujurat 49:13]

Even at times of weakness, step at a time…
Although reassured that in the sight of Allah the worthiness of an individual is measured only by taqwa, a person may still be weary - especially at times of high stress, depression and anxiety - of him being able to attain this taqwa and self-worth.

Yet the Quran inspires and motivates even the weakest of the Believers to achieve the highest success.  Allah declares in the Quran reassuringly, “Whoever works righteousness – whether male or female – while he (or she) is a Believer, verily, to him We will give a good life (in this life with contentment etc), and certainly We shall give them a reward (in the eternal Hereafter) according to the best of what they used to do.”  [Surah Nahl 16:97]  Thus when overwhelmed by stress and concerns, doing noble and pious deeds may seem far, but a believer finds reassurance that he or she will be rewarded by the best acts he does at any time in his life and momentary lapses may well be forgiven by Allah the Oft-Forgiving, Merciful.

And at that moment of trauma when little seems possible, a believer is reminded in the Quran, “And whoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant) will see it (on the Day of Resurrection to be rewarded) and whoever does mischief equal to the weight of an atom shall see it.”  [Surah Zalzalah 99:7-8]  So instead of despair, a believer is found unconcerned of the society’s estimation of him or of a major worldly loss, there is neither grief over what destroyed the past nor anxiety over what the future holds, rather the only concern is to do even an atoms weight of good at that difficult moment – even if it is merely persevering patiently till a better moment later on when big acts of piety can be performed because eventually the reward from Allah, the most Merciful, is in accordance to the best actions performed by the person.  In fact patiently persevering in such a difficult moment may rank as the best of deeds!

Even the worst moment can actually become the best…
In fact not a moment passes by in the life of a Muslim even if a catastrophe befalls him, except that it can be a success and a bonus for the Believer if he bears it patiently!  Even while overwhelmed by grief, anxieties and a desire to finish it all with suicide, merely holding on till it passes away even without doing any other good deed in that state can actually turn that depressing moment into one of triumph and sure success so why resort to suicide then?  The Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings be on him) said, “The case of a believer is amazing!  Every affair of his is good for him, and this is not for anyone except a believer: if he experiences something pleasant, he is grateful to Allah and that is good for him; and if he comes across some adversity, he is patiently persevering (i.e. has sabr) and that too is good for him!” [Compiled in Sahih Muslim]

In fact we learn from another hadith that, “When Allah wants well for a slave of His, He hastens the punishment in this world (rather than the severe and eternal Hereafter).  And when Allah wants for His slave bad, He withholds from him (the punishment for) his sin until he takes it from him on the Day of Resurrection.”  [An authentic hadith collected by Tirmidhi]  Thus the one suffering hardship may actually be more beloved to Allah than one who is being left and not punished despite sins and impiety.   The Prophet informed, “Nothing strikes a Muslim – no fatigue, illness, worry, grief, hurt nor sorrow; not even a prick of a thorn – except that Allah wipes off due to it some of his sins.” [Collected in Sahih of Bukhari & Muslim]

Even if his world seems to be falling apart…
With a sense of worth for even the smallest good deeds, a believer bears the most trying of hardships reassured that as the Messenger of Allah said, “Verily, the greatness of the reward is with the greatness (or severity) of the trial.  Verily if Allah loves a people He tries them (with trials).”  [An authentic hadith collected by Tirmidhi]

Thus, what may seem to another as his world falling apart in front of his eyes and nothing to live for, a Believer sees in the same an equally great world of unending bliss and comfort being prepared for him or her in Paradise so long as he bears it with patience for although this life is for being tried repetitively, “Verily along with every difficulty is relief (that comes thereafter).”  [Surah Inshirah 94:6]

The relief is near – a guarantee from Allah…
If the relief doesn’t come immediately, it’s not far.  This, Allah guarantees, “Or did you think that you will enter Paradise without such (trials) that came to those who passed away before you?  They were afflicted with severe poverty and ailments and were so shaken that even the Messenger and those who believed along with him said, ‘When will come the help of Allah?’  Yes!  Certainly, the help of Allah is near!”  [Surah Baqarah 2:214].

So why then would anyone want to commit suicide!!
It is not surprising then, with such compelling reasons to live for and reassurances of help, Allah warned of some of the most severe punishments for the one who ends his own life – a life that in fact belongs to Allah!  As the above mentioned hadith of the punishment of the one who committed suicide shows, the self-infliction of the same fatal blow repeatedly in hell-fire again and again, a person who commits suicide hasn’t found an escape from his worries; in fact, it’s just the beginning.
